Dependability and Performability Analysis

چکیده
In this tutorial, we discuss several practical issues regarding specification and solution of dependability and performability models. We compare model types with and without rewards. Continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs) are compared with (continuous-time) Markov reward models (MRMs) and generalized stochastic Petri nets (GSPNs) are compared with stochastic reward nets (SRNs). It is shown that reward-based models could lead to more concise model specification and solution of a variety of new measures. With respect to the solution of dependability and performability models, we identify three practical issues: largeness, stiffness, and non-exponentiality, and we discuss a variety of approaches to deal with them, including some of the latest research efforts. 1Thls research was partially supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA Contract No. NAS1-19480 while the first two authors were in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681.

Approximate Performability and Dependability Analysis Using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets
Haverkort, B.R., Approximate performability and dependability analysis using generalized stochastic Petri nets, Performance Evaluation 18 (1993) 61-78. Since current day fault-tolerant and distributed computer and communicat ion systems tend to be large and complex, their corresponding performability models will suffer from the same characteristics. Therefore, calculating performability measure...
متن کاملLayered Dependability Modeling of an Air Traffic Control System
Quality attributes, such as performance and dependability of a software-intensive system are constrained by its software architecture. The combined performance and dependability (called performability) effects of an architecture can be evaluated by constructing a performability model that considers the failure/repair behavior and performance attributes of its components, interactions among the ...
متن کاملMarkov Renewal Theory Applied to Performability Evaluation
Computer and communication systems are designed to meet a certain speciied behavior. The procurement of metrics to establish how well the system behaves, that is, how closely it follows the speciied behavior , is the objective of quantitative analysis. Traditionally, performance and dependability evaluation are used as separate approaches to provide quantitative gures of system behavior. Perfor...
متن کاملStochastic Methods for Dependability, Performability, and Security Evaluation
Stochastic methods are commonly used for dependability evaluation. In the mid 1970’s, stochastic evaluation was proposed for combined performance/dependability evaluation, called performability evaluation. Extending reliability evaluation to include performance related behaviors presented new challenges, most notably due to the large difference in time scale of performanceand dependability-rela...
متن کاملTransient Analysis of Dependability/Performability Models by Regenerative Randomization with Laplace Transform Inversion
In this paper we develop a variant of a previously proposed method (the regenerative randomization method) for the transient analysis of dependability/performability models. The variant is obtained by developing a closed-form expression for the solution of the truncated transformed model obtained in regenerative randomization and using a Laplace transform inversion algorithm. Using models of mo...
متن کاملPerformability Modeling for Multi-layered Service Systems
Distributed software is usually structured in layers, with some kind of operational control or user interface tasks as the topmost layer, making requests to various layers of servers. Client Server systems and ODP (Open Distributed Processing) systems such as DCE, ANSA and CORBA are structured this way, as are distributed transaction processing systems. Performance and dependability are the two...
